Kappa Kappa Gamma (Kappa)

Kappa Kappa Gamma, called Kappa for short, was founded October 13, 1870 at Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL. The Beta Xi Chapter was founded at the University of Texas in 1902. It’s located at 2001 University, Austin, Tx 78705, and it’s one of the only two UT sorority houses that’s actually ON campus, right next door to Alpha Phi.

Philanthropy: Reading Is Fundamental

The Texas Kappa chapter participates in four annual philanthropic events: Reading is Key, Girls on the Run, Kappa Cookout, and Powderpuff.

Reading is Key (RIF) is a national program that all Kappa chapters support. Its mission is to help underprivileged children discover the joy of reading, specifically, to foster the development and delivery of literacy programs that encourage and motivate our younger generations to spend more time reading. Kappa works with directly with the Austin chapter of RIF to raise funds in addition to hosting an annual “Reading is Key” party for the Boys and Girls after-school program at the Wooldridge Elementary School here in Austin.

Girls on the Run is a semester-long partnership with an after-school program. It encourages elementary girls to see exercise and nutrition in a healthy, positive way. Kappa members act as weekly coaches and mentors to the young girls, and at the end of the semester, they participate in a 5k together.

During football season, Kappa hosts another popular fundraiser. Each member sells tickets for an annual Kappa Cookout, which is catered by a favorite local Austin restaurant. It’s proceeds benefit Reading is Key, or occasionally, another approved charity.

Powderpuff is an annual showdown between Kappa and Pi-Phi in support of both their philanthropies. Select members of both sororities prepare during weekly practices, where they’re trained by University of Texas football players. After sufficient training, the games are held at the UT Intramural fields. Both chapters arrive in full force to cheer on their respective teams.
